What Is Operational Clutter Costing You?

3 min read

As a small business owner, every hour you save in your business is an hour you give back to yourself. And every subscription, tool, membership, or support resource you are paying for, but not using, is money and energy you’re burning.

Business inefficiency spills into your weekends, your relationships, and your body.

So let’s call out two real issues: First, operational clutter is draining your week. Somewhere in your business, a process is messier than it needs to be. A task you should have automated, simplified, or delegated is still on your plate. You are making too many small decisions that steal your capacity to focus on more consequential ones.

Caught in the double-pay trap

Second, you are paying for resources you are not activating. It may be software you barely open, memberships you keep meaning to use, or a course, advisor, community or system you invested in but never fully integrated into how you really operate.

This is what I call the double-pay trap. You pay once with money, and then twice with your investment of time, mental load, and/or frustration.

I have seen this happen with women founders who are more committed to staying in motion than stopping long enough to see what’s really going on. But what if your next breakthrough is not about pushing harder? What if it is about getting radically honest about what is draining you and keeping you from achieving greatness?

Audit what is not working

This week, identify:

  • One operationally draining process that eats up your time every week.  What feels heavier than it should? What do you tolerate because fixing it feels inconvenient?

  • One resource you pay for but don’t use. What needs to be canceled, completed, revisited, or fully activated?

Be willing to be honest with yourself. Reclaim your time. Stop double-paying.

If you are a woman business owner, your accountability circle is a core resource. I have learned that when I try to solve everything alone, I lose time, perspective, and momentum. On the other hand, when I have the right support, I make faster, cleaner decisions. That is why I want you to treat the Getting Unstuck Community as a real business resource you can access for accountability, reflection, and action: Join here. You can also follow me on LinkedIn and start with my May 27 post on support as strategy.

Getting Unstuck Community

In August, the Getting Unstuck Community is on hiatus as many of us wind down summer breaks, children go back to school and work mode revs up. This pause is not a stop; it is space for you to breathe and set your intentions for the fall.

Use this break to do your own resource audit. Look closely at one process that is costing you time and one resource you are still paying for but not truly using. Notice what you reclaim when you simplify and effectively use what you already have.

We will reconvene on September 18 at 12 pm CT for a community session focused on dismantling hustle beliefs. Bring your August discoveries with you. What hours did you get back? What spend did you cut? What did your audit reveal about the ways hustle culture has been shaping your choices?

If you are ready for more personalized support, explore executive coaching and leadership development with Getting Unstuck Guide. I would be honored to help you identify what is keeping you stuck, clarify what comes next, and act with structure and confidence.

Reply and let me know: What do you want to bring back to the community in September?
