Scared AI Is Going to Steal Your Career?

Hey There Goal Getter,

How are you using AI these days? I know Artificial Intelligence is a controversial topic. Some people are excited about where all the new innovations might lead. Others are panicked by the environmental impact of managing data centers, the lack of gatekeepers in case bad actors exploit the technology before regulations catch up, and the need for media literacy to distinguish between reality and AI.

That said… In the spirit of professional growth, I’m taking some extra time this month to learn more about AI and the implications for my business and my community.

Seven years ago, I attended the International Government Communications Conference in Sharjah, UAE, to hear from experts on AI, open data, and the role of government in addressing the potential and pitfalls of AI. I was hooked by the idea of rapid change at a faster pace than we’ve ever seen, and I worried that I would get left behind. I made a conscious effort to learn more from experts of different backgrounds, incorporate AI into my business, and embrace AI in my personal life.

Since then, Artificial intelligence has gone from sci-fi to mainstream over the last few years, leaving many feeling overwhelmed. Today, many fear for the future of their jobs—or have already lost them-and all of us are endeavoring to stay relevant as more trades face the risk of being sunsetted. Trust me, I’m right there with you.

Periodically, advances in technology shake us up. In my early years in the workforce, email and websites were still in their early days. Remember how so many people only experienced  Zoom during the pandemic? Yes, AI is and will continue to be transformational, and yes, professionals will continue to learn and adapt, as we always must.

As a committed and lifelong learner, these slower, warmer months are an ideal time to explore new interests. This summer, you’ll find me lounging on my deck, reading about how the PR industry is innovating with AI and brainstorming how I can leverage the technology to improve my team’s productivity. I invite you to do the same with whatever piques your curiosity, whether it’s professional upskilling or personal enrichment. Here are a few thought starters:

  • New skills. Is there a new software, meeting framework, or project-management system that can help you stay on top of your game at work?

  • Trends in your industry. What’s new in your field? What are industry experts talking about? What can you do today to set yourself apart five years from now?

  • Hobbies. Is it time to step away from the technology and explore gardening, crafting, or a new recipe?

  • Gratitude. Is it time to send thank-you notes? When did you last check in with your network on how they are doing?

I’d love to hear what’s on your summer syllabus. Hit reply and let me know what you’re learning!
