A Guide to Moving Your Career Forward

Happy August Goal Getter!
I’m writing this from Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, (🦞🧡) where I just wrapped the second annual Momentum Summit, a project I co-created with the amazing Dr. Tashion Macon. With Momentum, she and I envisioned a space where we could gather Black leaders—especially women—in our networks who are committed to social good to honor our leaders and collective progress.
Our annual event allows us to emerge from our silos to build relationships and share ideas about how our organizations can tap into the abundant resources we need to thrive. I’ve left both last year and this year’s summits buzzing with inspiration, admiration, and hope, emotions I can’t recommend highly enough nowadays!

Stewarding Momentum is a big part of my effort to connect my network and leverage the influence I have to uplift my community. It’s hard work, and requires collaboration and vulnerability. As the days countdown to the summit, we occasionally worry: What if we put in all this work, and no one shows up??

Fortunately, the right people are always in the room, the panel discussion following the screening of Diminished Returns centered on action and awareness of long term implications of policies and how we can learn from examples across the nation. Programming on the Vineyard is challenging and the rewards of us coming together are sweet: stronger bonds, renewed purpose and, on a

more personal level, the self-confidence I derive from having created something that honors my mother’s legacy and seems to be of great value to all the participants. This year we added a private dinner sharing Sunrise Affirmations and how we are doing as humans in the current fight for democracy and equality.

How are you engaging as a leader these days? Are you wielding your influence for the greater good? Hit reply and let me know! Your successes and challenges inspire me, too! If you’ll be in MV let me know so we can plan to connect!

Coach’s Corner
Networking doesn’t have to feel transactional. Your primary focus shouldn’t be about “collecting connects,” but about building community.
The most meaningful career moves I’ve ever made came from conversations, not cold DM’s and emails.
Here are a few places that you can start:
✅Show genuine curiosity. Pick a topic that will engage you and keep your interest so you listen longer.
✅Lead with your story, not your resume. I start with my full name- Meredith Moore from Minnesota to help people remember and start a conversation about where we’re from.
✅Be a giver. Make connections without expectation. Follow up with resources, encouragement and acknowledge that you are glad to be connected.
When you shift from networking for opportunities to aligning with those who share your goals, the connections you make become more meaningful and mutually beneficial.
Careers are built on relationships. Unsure where to start? Lead with authenticity.
